If the Bottle Is Not Reaching the Labelling Station

Check the product path first.

Look for:

  • Bottle jam or incorrect spacing
  • Bottle sitting outside the guide rails
  • Product sensor not detecting the bottle

  • Bottle size or shape recently changed

A bottle may physically pass along the conveyor but still fail to reach the correct position for reliable detection and labelling.

If the Bottle Arrives but the Label Does Not Feed

Check the label path.

Common things to verify include:

  • Label roll is installed correctly
  • Label web is threaded correctly
  • Label web has not broken
  • Label roll is not empty
  • Label sensor is detecting the label gap
  • New label material matches the specified requirement

If the problem started immediately after changing the label roll, the roll installation, threading and label specification should be checked first.

If the Machine Stops After Changing Bottle Size

This is a common issue on machines handling multiple bottle formats.

Changing from one diameter or height to another may require adjustment of:

  • Side guides
  • Product sensor
  • Labelling head
  • Product spacing
  • Stabilising or pressing components

For example, a setting suitable for a 50 mm bottle may not position a 90 mm bottle correctly.

The machine should be set according to the changeover procedure for that product rather than simply replacing the bottle and restarting.

If It Stops Only at Higher Speed

Note whether the machine operates correctly at a lower speed.

If the fault appears only after increasing production speed, investigate the complete product-handling and labelling process.

At higher speeds, factors such as bottle stability, product spacing, detection and label feeding become more critical.

The practical operating speed should therefore be established for the actual bottle and label combination, not just the machine’s maximum rated speed.

If the Machine Stops Intermittently

An intermittent fault needs a different approach.

Record:

  • How long the machine runs before stopping
  • The bottle being processed
  • Production speed
  • HMI alarm
  • Whether the same point in the labelling cycle is involved
  • What was changed before the problem appeared

For example, a machine that stops every few minutes after a label-roll change provides a very different diagnostic clue from a machine that stops only when running one particular bottle size.

What If the Machine Keeps Running but Labels Are Wrong?

Don’t continue production simply because the machine has not stopped.

Check for:

  • Incorrect label height
  • Skewed labels
  • Inconsistent label position
  • Poor adhesion
  • Wrinkles or bubbles
  • Front and back labels losing alignment

A machine can continue running while producing rejected products. Stop and investigate if the label position changes unexpectedly.

What About Front-and-Back or Top Labelling?

The troubleshooting point depends on the machine configuration.

With a Front and Back Labelling Machine, check product orientation and positioning if the problem appears after a bottle-format change.

With a Top Label Applicator Machine, check whether the product is arriving at the application point at the correct height, position and spacing.

The same basic fault—”the machine stopped”—can therefore have a different cause depending on the labelling application.

Don’t Repeatedly Reset the Same Fault

A reset can clear a temporary condition, but it does not correct an underlying problem.

If the sequence becomes:

Stop → Reset → Run → Stop again

the fault should be investigated rather than repeatedly cleared.

Do not bypass safety devices or make electrical or mechanical adjustments unless you are trained and authorised to do so.

Contact your maintenance team or sticker labelling machine manufacturer when the fault is recurring, unexplained or involves electrical, drive, safety or mechanical systems.

When reporting the problem, provide:

  • Bottle size and shape

How Can Production Stops Be Reduced?

Most effective prevention starts with correct setup and routine maintenance.

For multi-format production, keep a defined setup for each bottle size, including guide and labelling-head positions. Regularly inspect the label path, product guides, sensors and other machine components according to the manufacturer’s maintenance recommendations.

Operator training is equally important: operators should know which adjustments are part of normal changeover and which faults require maintenance support.
