How Do You Calculate the Required Sticker Labelling Machine Speed?

When a buyer tells us, “I need a 60 bottles-per-minute sticker labelling machine,” we don’t treat 60 bottles per minute as the starting point. We first calculate where that number comes from.

The required speed should be based on the actual production target, available production time, changeover time, expected stoppages, bottle handling and labelling requirement. A machine’s maximum speed and the speed required for your production are not necessarily the same.

Start With the Required Production

Suppose a factory needs to label 12,000 bottles in an 8-hour shift. The theoretical requirement is:

12,000 ÷ 8 ÷ 60 = 25 bottles/minute

So, if the machine could run continuously for all eight hours, 25 bottles per minute would be enough. In an actual factory, however, the labelling machine will not spend every minute applying labels. There will be label-roll changes, bottle-format changes, operator adjustments, cleaning, minor stoppages and other interruptions.

If we assume the machine is effectively available for 85% of the scheduled time, the required operating rate becomes:

25 ÷ 0.85 = approximately 29.4 bottles/minute

Therefore, a machine capable of reliably running at around 30 bottles/minute on the actual product would be a more realistic starting point.

A Practical Speed Calculation

This calculation is more useful than simply choosing a machine based on a catalogue speed.

Why the Maximum Machine Speed Can Be Misleading

Suppose two manufacturers offer machines rated at 80 and 100 bottles per minute. It would be easy to assume that the 100 bottles/minute machine is the better choice.

But what happens if your product is a lightweight PET bottle, an oval container or a tapered bottle with a large label? The practical speed may be lower than the machine’s maximum mechanical capability.

A sticker labelling machine should therefore be evaluated against the actual combination of bottle, label and required production speed.

A useful question to ask a manufacturer is:

“What speed can this machine consistently achieve with my actual bottle and label?”

That is more meaningful than asking only for the maximum speed.

Bottle Diameter and Spacing Also Affect Speed

The machine has to move bottles through the labelling station with controlled spacing.

For example, if a bottle has a 60 mm diameter and the required gap between bottles is 40 mm, the product pitch is 100 mm. At 30 bottles per minute, the conveyor would need to move approximately 3,000 mm per minute, or 3 metres per minute.

If the bottle diameter or spacing changes, the required conveyor movement changes as well. This is one reason why a machine’s bottle range and speed should be considered together.

Label Size Is Part of the Calculation

The label-feed system also needs to operate at the required rate.

Suppose the label is 80 mm long and the gap between labels is 5 mm. The label pitch is therefore 85 mm. At 30 bottles per minute, the label web needs to advance approximately 2,550 mm per minute.

For a Front and Back Labelling Machine, two labels may be applied to every bottle. The production rate is still 30 bottles per minute, but the two labelling heads together are dispensing 60 labels per minute.

This distinction matters when checking the capacity of the label dispensing and application systems.

Multiple Products Can Change the Required Machine Speed

Consider a manufacturer running three bottle sizes:

C 90 mm 90 × 120 mm 20 bottles/min

One sticker labelling machine may be able to handle all three, but that does not mean all three products will necessarily run at the same speed.

Bottle stability, product spacing, label size and the required label position can change the practical operating speed. If the factory changes between these products several times per shift, changeover time also becomes part of the capacity calculation.

A machine that runs very fast but takes a long time to change from one bottle format to another may not provide the highest actual output over an entire shift.

What Should You Give the Manufacturer?

For a proper speed recommendation, provide more than just your desired bottles per minute.

With this information, a manufacturer can calculate the practical requirement instead of simply matching you to the nearest machine speed available.

What We Check as a Manufacturer

When selecting the speed of a sticker labelling machine, we look at the complete application. The calculation starts with the required finished production and then considers available production time, changeovers, expected interruptions, bottle handling, label dimensions and the number of labels applied to each product.

For a new application, actual product and label trials are particularly useful. They can show whether the required speed is achievable without compromising label position, adhesion or product stability.

The objective is not to recommend the machine with the highest number of bottles per minute. It is to recommend a machine that can reliably achieve the customer’s required production output under real production conditions.
