In a real production line, changing from one bottle diameter to another is not unusual. A company may run a 50 mm bottle in the morning, a 65 mm bottle after lunch and a 90 mm bottle later in the shift.
The important question is not simply whether the sticker labelling machine can label all three.
The real production question is:
What has to change on the machine when the bottle diameter changes, how long will the changeover take, and will the first bottles after changeover be labelled accurately?
That is where the difference between a machine that can technically handle different bottles and a machine that is practical for daily production becomes important.

What Actually Changes When Bottle Diameter Changes?
A sticker labelling machine positions the label relative to the product.
When the bottle diameter changes, the physical surface of the bottle moves closer to or farther away from the labelling head.
The machine may therefore require adjustment of the:
- Product guide
- Labelling head
- Label dispensing position
- Sensor
- Pressing/holding roller
- Side belt or stabilising mechanism
- Product spacing, depending on the machine configuration
The exact adjustments depend on the type of sticker labelling machine and the bottle application.

That is why changeover design is as important as the machine’s diameter range.
What If the Operator Doesn’t Adjust the Machine?
This is where real-world problems start.
Suppose the machine has been set for a 50 mm bottle.
The operator then introduces a 90 mm bottle without changing the required settings.
The conveyor may still carry the bottle normally. The machine may still dispense the label. Nothing may appear mechanically wrong.
But the label can be applied at the wrong position because the relationship between the bottle surface and the labelling head has changed.
The result could be:
- Label too high or too low
- Incorrect side position
- Poor contact
- Wrinkles
- Inconsistent application
- Incorrect front/back alignment
This is why operators should not treat a diameter change as simply changing the bottle and pressing “start.”
The First Bottles After Changeover Matter
One of the most overlooked production issues is start-up after a format change.
Even after the mechanical adjustments are made, the operator should normally verify the first few labelled bottles.
Why?
Because a setting that is correct for one bottle may not produce the desired result immediately on another format.
The operator should check:
Is the label at the correct height?
Is the label centred?
Is the leading edge in the correct position?
Is the label adhering properly?
Is the bottle stable while passing the application point?
Once the settings are confirmed, production can continue.
For companies changing formats several times a day, this small verification step can prevent a much larger quantity of rejected products.
Does a Bigger Bottle Always Need a Slower Speed?
No.
A larger diameter does not automatically mean that the machine must run slower.
What matters is the complete product-handling condition.
A rigid, stable 90 mm bottle may run very well at the required speed.
A lightweight 50 mm bottle may actually require more careful handling because it can be easier to disturb during high-speed movement.
Other factors also matter:
- Bottle height
- Bottle weight
- Bottle shape
- Label size
- Label material
- Product spacing
- Application method
Therefore, speed should be confirmed for the actual bottle formats, rather than assuming that the smallest bottle will always be the fastest.
What If Bottle Diameter Changes Within the Same Product?
This is a different problem.
Suppose the nominal bottle diameter is 65 mm, but actual production bottles vary between 63 mm and 67 mm because of manufacturing tolerances.
That is not the same as deliberately changing from a 65 mm bottle to an 85 mm bottle.
For normal production, the sticker labelling machine should be designed around the expected product tolerance.
The manufacturer should understand the actual dimensional variation of the bottle, particularly when accurate label positioning is important.
If the bottle dimensions vary excessively from one piece to another, the machine may not be the only issue—the product itself may be outside the consistency needed for reliable automatic labelling.
What About Tapered Bottles?
Diameter changes become more complicated when the bottle is tapered.
A straight cylindrical bottle might have approximately the same diameter along its labelling surface.
A tapered bottle does not.
For example, the bottle could be:
70 mm at the bottom → 62 mm at the top
Now the labelling area itself is changing in diameter.
This can affect how a sticker contacts the surface, particularly with larger labels.
In such applications, the manufacturer needs to consider the actual shape of the labelling surface, not simply specify the maximum bottle diameter.
What If You Need Different Front and Back Labels?
For a Front and Back Labelling Machine, diameter changes can have another consequence: maintaining the correct relationship between the front and rear labels.
The machine has to control the bottle orientation and position so that both labels are applied where intended.
This is particularly important for oval and rectangular bottles.
If the product shifts or rotates during handling, the front label may look acceptable while the rear label is no longer correctly aligned.

Should You Buy One Machine or Separate Machines?
Suppose your company has:
50 mm, 65 mm and 90 mm round bottles.
If all three products use similar labels and the production schedule involves reasonable changeovers, one multi-format sticker labelling machine may be an efficient solution.
But suppose you have:
- 40 mm round bottle
- 110 mm square bottle
- 150 mm oval container
- Different label positions
- High production volumes
The question changes.
Trying to make one machine accommodate every application may create excessive changeover time or compromise production efficiency.
Sometimes two machines configured around different product families are more productive than one highly flexible machine.
The correct decision should therefore be based on the total cost and production requirements—not simply the number of products.
What Should You Ask a Sticker Labelling Machine Manufacturer?
Before purchasing, ask these practical questions:
1. What is the actual bottle diameter range?
Not just “multiple sizes.”
Ask for the minimum and maximum recommended diameter.
2. What adjustments are required between sizes?
Ask the manufacturer to explain exactly what the operator needs to change.
3. Are change parts required?
If yes, ask which parts and how many sets you will need.
4. How long does a normal changeover take?
Ideally, ask the manufacturer to demonstrate it.
5. What speed can each bottle size achieve?
Don’t rely only on the machine’s maximum rated speed.
6. Can my actual bottles be tested?
This is particularly important if the bottle is tapered, oval, lightweight or unusually shaped.
Don’t Confuse “Machine Range” With “Production Range”
This is perhaps the most important point for buyers.
A sticker labelling machine may have a specified mechanical range of bottle diameters.
But your practical production range depends on much more:
Machine range + bottle geometry + label specification + required speed + changeover requirements
A machine that technically accommodates a 40–100 mm diameter range may not be equally productive across every bottle in that range.
The right question is therefore not:
“Can the machine handle my bottle diameter?”
It is:
“Can the machine handle my complete bottle range reliably at my required production speed, with a practical changeover?”
That is the question a manufacturer should be prepared to answer.
Before You Request a Quotation
Send the manufacturer your complete bottle details rather than only one sample specification.
Include:
- Minimum bottle diameter
- Maximum bottle diameter
- Bottle height
- Bottle shape
- Bottle material
- Label dimensions
- Label position
- Required bottles/minute
- Number of format changes per shift
If possible, provide actual bottles and labels for testing.
This allows the sticker labelling machine to be selected based on your production reality, rather than a generic machine specification.
Final Manufacturer’s Advice
A change in bottle diameter is not necessarily a problem for a sticker labelling machine.
The problem occurs when the machine is purchased without considering how that diameter change will be managed on the production floor.
If you change bottle sizes once a month, a manual adjustment may be perfectly acceptable.
If you change sizes five times every shift, changeover time and repeatability become major machine-selection factors.
The best sticker labelling machine is therefore not the one claiming to handle the widest range of bottle diameters. It is the one that can handle your actual bottle range accurately, consistently and with a changeover process that makes sense for your production.
